{MY} Mother's Day.

(G, age 3 at his favorite vacation spot, Lake Superior in MN)

It's no secret if you read my blog that I have a child diagnosed with classic Autism.  It's also no secret that I will walk to the end of the earth for him to find him treatments.  If you don't know what it means when people refer to Autism parents as "warriors", let me help you....A warrior is a parent of a child with Autism that has chosen to take on physicians who claim there is no reason to try new diets, try new supplements, try new homeopathic means, try new therapies all in the name of RECOVERING your child.  Autism is a complicated disorder as treatments have to be catered to each child specifically.  The problem?  You have to go down a hell of a lot of dead ends to find a path that leads you to breakthroughs.  It costs a fortune and you never know what treatment is going to work, you do have to waste money to be able to see gains in your child.

There are many parents of children with Autism who think all of this "warrior" business is overrated, unnecessary, too hard, too expensive, etc.... But you know what, when you see HUGE gains in your child, you want more, you want more for your child's sake so you learn more about Krebs and Methylation Cycles than your average parent, you learn so much that you can trump your mainstream pediatrician in a medical debate, it's true.

We chose to have our son, we didn't choose Autism, that was something that decided to come along for the ride that now we have to figure out how to get rid of.  There are children who have recovered fully, to the point of their diagnosis being taken away, I've met them, and their warrior parents.  I am choosing to never sit back and think my child's condition is a waste of time, money, energy etc... because I AM a warrior mom and on this Mother's Day, I pledge to my child, I will NOT ignore that you have Autism, I will ALWAYS fight on your behalf, even if that means I have to go without, you will not.  You were a gift, and even though there are a few more layers than NT kids to unwrap, I know you are in there and I will NOT let you down baby boy, mama will FOREVER fight for you because I AM YOUR WARRIOR!!!

And the woman who started this all and paved the way for many of us who didn't know which way to turn, bless her heart, it's Miss Jenny McCarthy.

A mother warrior is…May 13

A Mother who hears there is no hope for her child and, instead of retreating and mourning, breaks down walls, weaves her way through Obstacles, follows her intuition even when people tell her she is crazy. She is a mother who believes in hope. A mother who believes in miracles and is able to carry on with strength and determination, even when her partner doubts her and offers no support. A mother who never gives up when she keeps hitting dead ends. These are the women who will continue to open the door so future generation of children don't have to suffer. These are the mothers with hears of gold and shields made of the strongest armor.

I know in my heart that someday this era will be marked as an era when a group of parents fought the giants to help save their babies and future generations. Margaret Mead, the late great sociologist, once said, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

These are the women I walk beside proudly and whose numbers I hope will grow. We are the seekers of change. We are the seekers of truth.

We are the Mother Warriors and we will never give up.

With love,

Jenny McCarthy

On this Mother's Day, I pay homage to all the warrior mom's before me, who have taught me more than I thought I'd ever know (or cared to know for that matter) and who are some of the most amazingly strongest woman on this earth.  You guys amaze me with your knowledge and help me become a better mom to my own Autistic child every single day.  Happy Mother's Day!
